Loosen the screws that hold the engine cover in place and remove the cover.
-
2
Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug by pulling on the protective rubber boot that covers the tip of the spark plug.
-
-
3
Loosen the three bolts that hold the starter shroud to the front of the engine. Lift the shroud off of the engine and place it upside-down on a work table.
-
4
Hold the starter shroud with one hand and turn the pulley in the center of the shroud counterclockwise until it stops turning. Clamp the shroud in place using a pair of wide-jaw locking pliers.
-
5
Grasp the knot in the knot hole (found near the center of the pulley) with a pair of needle-nose pliers, and pull the damaged rope from the pulley.
-
6
Insert the new rope (with the handle on the other end) into the shroud, guiding the rope into the pulley and toward the knot hole. When the rope appears in the knot hole, grasp it with a pair of needle-nose pliers and pull out about a foot of rope.
-
7
Tie a knot in the end of the rope. Singe the end of the rope with a match or lighter.

Pull on the rope from outside the starter shroud, seating the knot firmly in the knot hole. Remove the wide-jaw locking pliers, allowing the spring to recoil the rope around the pulley.

9
Place the starter shroud on the engine and tighten the three bolts to secure the shroud.
-
10
Reattach the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
-
