How to Dye Black Hair Chestnut Blond
Trying to layer chestnut blond hair color over black hair will have little to no effect because standard hair dye is not capable of lifting color from your hair to render a lighter shade. In order to dye black hair, you must first lighten the hair, so it is pale enough to display the color of the dye. Read all of the tips and warnings for the products you purchase and pay attention to the condition of your hair during the process to prevent damage. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Mix together one single application packet of powdered hair lightener and 4 oz. of 30 volume developer in a non-metallic bowl. Volume numbers, ranging from 10 to 40, indicate strength of the product. Read the hair lightener packaging to make sure it is safe for on-the-scalp bleaching. Some hair lighteners are not safe to use on your scalp and could cause severe skin irritation.
-
2
Apply the mixture to your dry hair with a tint brush starting at the roots and spreading the mixture along the length of your hair to the ends. Wear gloves during the application to protect your hands from the chemicals in the lightener.

-
3
Set a timer for 30 minutes when your hair is completely covered with the lightener.
-
4
Wipe one small section of your hair with a washcloth dampened in cool water to remove the lightener. Check the color to see if your hair has reached a dark blond or strawberry blond color. If your hair is still dark, reapply the lightener and continue processing. Check the color again every 10 minutes, but do not leave the lightener on for longer than 60 minutes total.
-
5
Rinse your hair under warm, running water to remove all of the lightener. When the lightener is removed, shampoo and condition your hair gently and rinse thoroughly.
-
6
Repeat steps 1 and 2 substituting blue toner for the hair lightener if your hair is orange or has an unwanted red tint. Wipe away and reapply a small amount of the mixture every five minutes until the orange has disappeared. Rinse the toner from your hair.
-
7
Measure equal parts chestnut blond hair dye and 10 volume developer in a clean applicator bottle. Place a gloved finger over the open tip of the bottle and shake it vigorously to mix the products together.
-
8
Apply the dye to your damp hair from the roots to the tips with the applicator bottle. Leave the dye on your hair for the amount of time indicated on the hair dye bottle or approximately 25 to 30 minutes.
-
9
Rinse the dye from your hair with warm, running water. When the water runs clear, apply conditioner and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing away the conditioner.

Tips & Warnings
Stop the process immediately and rinse your hair if it becomes brittle and begins to break at any point. Consult a professional hairdresser before you try to dye your hair again.
