How to Calculate Pool Capacities
A swimming pool requires proper maintenance and cleaning. In particular, you need to use some chemicals such as chlorine to disinfect the water in the pool. To correctly dose the pool with chemicals, you should know how much water it contains. Calculate the capacity of the pool as the product of its area and depth. Does this Spark an idea?

Find out the pool's length and width from the pool specifications in the owner's manual, or else measure them directly with the measuring tape.

Calculate the pool's area by multiplaying the length by the width. For example, if the pool measures 18 feet by 6 feet, then the area is 18 x 6 = 108 square feet.

Measure the pool's depth at the shallow end and at the deep end, add them together, and then divide the sum by 2 to compute the pool's average depth. For instance, the pool's depth is 3 feet at the shallow end and 7 feet at the deep end. The average depth is (3 + 7) / 2 = 5 feet.

Multiple the pool's area by the average pool depth to calculate the pool's capacity in cubic feet. For instance, if the average depth is 5 feet, then the pool's capacity is 108 square feet x 5 feet = 540 cubic feet.

Multiply the pool's capacity in cubic feet by 7.4805 (the number of gallons in a cubic foot of water) to calculate the volume of water in gallons. In our the example, the volume is 540 x 7.4805 = 4,039.47 gallons.

Multiply the pool's capacity in cubic feet by 28.3168 (the number of liters in a cubic foot) to calculate the volume of water in liters. In our the example, the volume is 540 x 28.3168 = 15,291.07 liters.
