Drill Press Tutorial

Drill Press Tutorial thumbnail
The varying sizes of drill bits add to the flexibility offered by a drill press.

A drill press allows you to make precise holes in a piece of material. The drill bit is anchored to a rotating spindle, so the hole is always drilled in a straight line and in the exact location you choose. By adjusting the tilt of the spindle, you can drill angled holes that would be difficult to make with a handheld drill. The depth of the hole can also be limited, so you never have to worry about going too far and ruining your project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the chuck and insert the drill bit you wish to use for your project. You may have to use a key to loosen the chuck, depending on the style of your drill press. Check your owner's manual if you are unsure whether you have a keyless or keyed chuck.

    • 2

Adjust the two lock nuts to set the plunge depth. One lock nut limits the range of the up stroke and the other limits the range of the down stroke.

    • 3

Place the material to be drilled on the drill press table. Secure it with clamps so it will not move while you work.

    • 4

Choose a speed for the drill's rotation. Consult your owner's manual for the exact instructions on setting the speed. The owner's manual also has a table showing the recommended settings for different drill bits and types of material.

    • 5

Turn on the power switch and watch the drill bit to make sure it is rotating in a straight line. If it is not, turn off the power and repeat Step 1 to re-seat the bit.

    • 6

Lower the drill bit down slowly into your material until it hits the depth limit. For deep holes, clear the shavings out as you drill by pulling the bit back out of the material and then dropping it back down to drill deeper. Lift the bit out of the hole and turn off the power switch.

    • 7

Clear off the shavings and examine the hole to make sure it meets your specifications. Repeat Step 6 if you are not satisfied with the results. Remove the clamps and take the material off of the drill press when you are finished.
