How to Mount Solar Stake Lights Onto a Deck

How to Mount Solar Stake Lights Onto a Deck thumbnail
Place solar lighting anywhere on your deck to enjoy evening views.

Solar stake lights are designed to be pressed into the ground, which holds them securely upright so their solar panels can take in the sun to power the light. Because the lights are solar powered, they require no wiring, which makes them an easy choice for do-it-yourselfers who would rather not work with electricity. Solar-powered lights also are more environmentally friendly than electric lights, because they use no energy other than that provided by the sun. You can light your deck with solar stake lights just as easily as you can use them to light the surrounding ground. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a small, decorative flower pot any place you would like a solar light. The 5-inch diameter pots work well for this purpose. If you want the post to remain relatively unnoticeable, choose plain terra cotta pots or a color that matches your deck. For a more coordinated look, choose pots that match the finish or theme of your solar lights, such as pots with faux copper finishes for copper outdoor lights.

    • 2

Fill each pot with dirt to about 1 inch below the rim. The dirt will hold the light's stake well while allowing for drainage so water does not build up below the light.

    • 3

Press the stake of each light into the dirt. If the dirt does not hold the stake securely, remove the light, add more dirt, and pack it tightly by pressing it down with a garden trowel, then try again. Top the dirt with decorative pebbles or aquarium rocks.

    • 4

Move the pots to sunnier areas during the daylight hours if you want them to gain a better solar charge, then set them into shaded areas at night. The benefit of this method of installing the lights is that they are always mobile and the placement can be modified anytime your lighting needs require.
