How to Replace a Moen 4900 Faucet Cartridge

The Moen 4900 faucet is a popular bathroom sink faucet. The Moen 4900 uses cartridges under each handle knob to control the flow of water. When you begin to have a dripping faucet, chances are that the cartridge seals are faulty. Replacing the cartridge on the Moen 4900 requires removing the handles to access the cartridge. Un like many cartridge type faucets, the Moen 4900 does not use cartridge clips to hold the cartridge in place. Moen uses a simple cartridge retaining nut to secure the cartridge inside the faucet body. Moen replacement cartridges are available at home improvement centers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply under the bathroom sink. The water shut off valves are on each of the water lines coming from the wall. Turn the shut off valve handles clockwise to shut off the water to the Moen faucet.

    • 2

Insert the blade of a utility knife in the seam between the knob cap and the top of the knob. Pry the cap out of the knob with the utility knife blade. Remove the screw securing the knob to the cartridge with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the knob off the faucet body.

    • 3

Remove the cartridge retaining nut securing the cartridge to the faucet with an adjustable wrench. Turn the cartridge nut counterclockwise to remove. Grab the end of the cartridge with your fingers and pull the cartridge straight out of the faucet.

    • 4

Insert the new cartridge into the faucet until it seats inside the bottom of the faucet body. You may have to twist the cartridge back and forth to get the cartridge to seat fully on the bottom. Thread the cartridge retaining nut over the cartridge until the nut is hand tight. Turn the nut another 1/2 turn with the adjustable wrench.

Place the knob over the top of the cartridge, and secure the knob with the retaining screw. Push the knob cover over the top of the handle until the cover snaps into place. Turn on the water supply below the sink.
