Metal Engraving Technique
Metal engraving is the process of cutting a design into metal using a steel tool called a graver. Man used engraving for centuries to claim ownership and demonstrate status and power. As such, you can find many examples of engraved jewelry, armaments of all sorts, and household items. Although the process of engraving is easy, the technique takes a great deal of practice to perfect.
Things You'll Need
- Sketch paper
- Pencil
- Acetone or iron
- Laser printer
- Distilled water
- Metal to engrave
- Gravers
- Engraving block, shellac stick or vise
Instructions
-
-
1
Identify the metal you want to engrave and sketch a design.
-
2
Copy your sketch on a laser printer. Transfer the design onto the metal by placing the laser print copy side down against the metal and using acetone or the heat from an iron to transfer the ink to the metal.
-
-
3
Secure the metal you plan to engrave with a vise, engraving block or shellac stick.
-
4
Sharpen the graver until it is sharp and polished.
-
5
Begin engraving by sliding the graver across the metal to cut the outline of your design. Gravers come in many shapes and sizes. The cut of the graver corresponds to the shape and size of the graver. Add dimension and vary the width of engraved lines by rolling the graver so it is sideways as you cut.
-
6
Change gravers as you work to add shading to your design. Engraving requires a keen, precise graver edge. Stop and sharpen each graver from time to time as needed.
