How to Prevent Hair Extensions From Getting Frizzy

Hair extensions are designed to add length and fullness to any hairstyle. Hair extensions are made of synthetic fibers, human hair or a blend of both. The higher the quality of the hair extensions, the easier they are to maintain. As higher-quality hair extensions can behave similarly to the hair growing out of your scalp, frizziness is one common problem that can occur. This is especially true for hair extensions worn on a regular basis. There are steps you can take to avoid frizzy hair extensions.

Things You'll Need

• Gentle shampoo
• Conditioner
• Leave-in conditioner
• Anti-frizz serum
• Light cream-based moisturizer

Instructions

1. Wash your hair extensions with a light, gentle shampoo. A gentle shampoo will not contain sodium lauryl sulfate or paraben, which can be harsh and harmful your hair extensions and scalp. Gently work the shampoo through your hair extensions with the pads of your fingers to produce a lather. Do not scrunch up your hair extensions because that can cause tangles and frizziness. Thoroughly rinse the shampoo from your hair.

2. Apply conditioner to your hair extensions and gently work it through the strands with the pads of your fingers. Allow the conditioner to sit on the hair for a few minutes to provide moisture to your hair extensions. Gently rinse out the conditioner with cool water. Cool water locks in moisture. Apply a leave-in creme conditioner with your fingers or liquid leave-in conditioner with a spray bottle. This will balance out the moisture level as the hair dries.

3. Apply an anti-frizz serum to your hair extensions with your fingertips and the palms of your hands. Anti-frizz serum contains oils that help smooth and straighten the hair. Pay close attention to the ends of the hair where frizz is most likely to start. Use a hair dryer on low heat or a terry-cloth bath towel to start the drying process. Once the hair extensions are only slightly damp, allow them to air dry.

4. Run your fingers through your hair extensions to detangle the strands. You also can gently comb through the extensions to create a smoother appearance. Do not use a brush, as this can cause the strands to stretch and frizz. Between washings, apply a light cream-based moisturizer to your hair extensions when needed to smooth the hair and preserve the shine.
