DIY Wind & Weather Vane

Learn how to make your own DIY weather vane.

A weather vane, also known as a wind vane, is a weather device used to determine the direction the wind is blowing. Weather vanes are typically made from metal, and can be seen on the highest peaks of buildings and architecture. They are normally designed in a decorative fashion for ornamental purposes. You can build your own weather vane out of some basic materials that can be mounted in your yard. This is a fun science project for children of all ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a slit in each end of a 12 inch piece of wood using a hand saw or serrated knife. The slits need to be 1 1/2 inches deep.

    • 2

Place a metal washer on top of the broom handle. Place the 12 inch piece of wood on top of the washer, slightly off center so the length of the arrow head is shorter than the tail, and hammer a nail through it. Turn the wood back and forth until the hole is loose enough for the wood to easily turn on the nail.

    • 3

Cut an arrow head and tail out of the aluminum pie pan using a pair of scissors.

    • 4

Place a small amount of glue on the back of the arrow head and tail, and slide each piece into one of the slits in the wood.

    • 5

Mount the weather vane in the ground. Find a place outside in your yard where you would like to put the weather vane, and push the broom handle into the ground until it is secure.
