Instructions

    • 1

Ensure both the great room and the kitchen nook are cozy and inviting. Create a focal point in the great room, across from the kitchen nook. This gives those in the kitchen a good view. Use a TV, fireplace or large piece of artwork as the focal point.

    • 2

Combine wood and metal furniture styles throughout the kitchen nook and the great room. Opt for a light-colored wood grain to keep the kitchen nook open and light for the main furniture theme, adding wrought iron pieces as decorative elements and accessories. Cushions and other fabrics should remain soft and comfortable, such as cotton and linen, to avoid making the rooms too formal.

    • 3

Pull the same decorating colors throughout the great room and into the kitchen nook. Remember that the kitchen nook is a smaller area, so choose your decorating colors wisely. Avoid overly dark or bright colors for the main colors, such as gray, navy blue or fuchsia. Implement pale colors for a warm, open feeling.

    • 4

Place couches a few inches away from the walls to make the great room appear larger. Set the kitchen table near a window to allow plenty of light.

    • 5

Add wall sconces and pendant lights for brightness. Opt for light with individual power switches so you can adjust the amount of light in the room to your preference.

    • 6

Utilize light, airy curtains for a breezy effect in the kitchen nook. In the great room, opt for a lined version of the same color and style of curtains.

    • 7

Minimize artwork on the walls. Instead, choose one or two large pieces of artwork to display. The less artwork there is, the less cluttered the space will seem. If you must hang several pieces of art, group them together. Clear away clutter and unnecessary items. With any size room, clutter takes away from the main decorating theme.
