How to Wear Your Hair in Winter to Protect It
During the bitter winter season you bundle up to protect your skin from the harsh weather, but your hair also needs protection from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays and the friction caused by wearing winter hats and hoods. Although your head may be warm with a cotton or wool hat, you'll need moisturizing hair products to keep your hair healthy until spring arrives. According to Charles Worthington, author of "The Complete Book of Hairstyling," the sun's rays are powerful during the winter due to the snow's ability to reflect light. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Wash your hair daily with a moisturizing shampoo. The cold, dry air in the winter dries out your hair, which can leave it susceptible to frizziness and split ends. The moisturizing shampoo will restore moisture lost due to wind exposure. Follow up the moisturizing shampoo with a moisturizing conditioner.

2
Saturate your hair with a deep conditioner on a weekly basis for at least 10 to 12 minutes. The deep conditioner will seal in moisture, reduce the amount of frizziness caused by hats and prevent split ends from occurring. Wash out the deep conditioner with warm water. Then rinse your hair with cool water to seal the hair cuticle and boost shine.

Avoid going outside with wet hair, as the hair can become brittle in extremely cold temperatures. Spray a light coat of leave-in conditioner into your hair, and spray heat-protectant spray into your hair to protect it from the effects of blow drying. Comb the heat-protectant spray through your hair from roots to ends to work the product through your hair.

Dry your hair with a blow dryer on a low heat setting. Brush your hair with a large paddle brush to smooth it out and speed up the drying process. Blast your hair with cool air to dry the hair without causing heat damage or moisture loss. Do not use a flat iron, as the high level of heat can dry out your hair and cause heat damage.

Pour two to three drops of antifrizz hair serum into your palms, and smooth it over your hair to reduce frizz caused by your hat. Pull your hair back and secure it by creating a bun with a snag-free hair band to keep it in place.
