Instructions

    • 1

Figure out how much you owe and to whom. Sort through statements and notices to create a list of loans and minimum payments. You can also look up how much you owe and who your lenders are through the National Student Loan Data System. You will need to know to whom to send payments and will want to track your progress.

    • 2

Stay in your current residence. If you must move for work, choose a living situation of similar or lower cost. Housing is the largest part of your living expenses and staying in a student apartment will leave more money to pay back loans. You can move to a nicer place once you are debt-free.

    • 3

Research industry standards for salaries in your field. When you get a job offer, negotiate for salary based on what your research says you are worth. You may not get a higher offer but it won't hurt to ask.

    • 4

Once you have a job, make a budget. Keep your expenses as low as possible and allocate extra money to your student loans.

    • 5

Send at least the minimum payments to all your lenders each month.

    • 6

Send extra payments when possible. Pay down the loans with the highest interest rate first. Then target your remaining loans one at a time. Being able to cross loans off the list will help keep your motivation up.

    • 7

Consider looking for other income sources, such as a part-time job, pet sitting or tutoring. Use the money you make for extra loan payments.
