How to Make Bead Crafts & Crochet

How to Make Bead Crafts & Crochet thumbnail
String beads onto beading cord or crochet thread to hook easy accessories.

Like chocolate and peanut butter, beading and crochet are two things that go great together. Beaded crochet jewelry combines these two crafts to create accessories that look far more complex than they are. Even if you are a "beader" who has never picked up a crochet hook, or a crocheter who has never strung a bead, it is not difficult to learn to complete a bead crochet project, such as the the beaded cocktail ring featured in Vol. 4 of Craft magazine.

Things You'll Need

  • Clear nail polish
  • 6 mm glass or crystal beads
  • Elastic beading cord, gold or silver
  • Size D crochet hook
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Dab a small amount of clear nail polish on the end of your elastic beading thread to prevent it from fraying. Let dry.

    • 2

String 25 beads, leaving your elastic beading cord on its spool. Let the beads fall back toward the spool.

    • 3

Make a slip knot. Insert your hook into the loop. Wrap your elastic over the top of the hook (this is called "yarning over"), catching the elastic in the crook and pulling it though the loop. This is one chain. Make three more chains. Insert the hook in the first chain made and pull through the elastic, joining the chains in a circle.

    • 4

Slide a bead down to the hook and insert the hook through the center of the ring. Yarn over and pull the loop back through the circle. There are now two loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through both loops. This is a single crochet. The bead you pulled up should be embedded in the stitch. Make four more single crochets into the circle, slide another bead down before each stitch.

    • 5

Make two single crochets (without beads) into each stitch. You now have 10 single crochet stitches in a circle.

    • 6

Work one single crochet into each stitch around, pulling up a bead before each stitch. Single crochet around without beads. Alternate one more beaded round of single crochet with a non-beaded round.

    • 7

Chain 20. Check to see if the chain, slightly stretched, fits around your finger. Add or remove chains as needed. Join the chain to the stitch on the opposite side of the circle with a slip stitch. Cut off the elastic, leaving a six-inch tail.

    • 8

Pull the six-inch tail up through the center of the circle with your crochet hook. String on one bead and pull the end of the tail back through the center, leaving the bead at the center of the circle.

    • 9

Weave the tail through the ring and tie the end off securely inside the dome of beads. Dab nail polish on the knot and allow to dry before wearing your ring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Beads can be strung onto fine-gauge wire, thread, hemp or even yarn and crocheted into jewelry or added to crocheted clothing and accessories.
