Changing up your hair style can be exciting and an opportunity to express yourself and your style. It can also be frustrating trying to get your hair to grow in a direction it’s not accustomed to. While you can never change the direction of growth inside the hair follicle, you can work with the hair to manipulate it to start going the direction you want it to go beyond the scalp. After a few days of regular care and attention, your hair should begin to take the shape you want.

Spritz your hair with a spray bottle to make the hair damp, but not dripping wet. Or you can work on your hair immediately after you get out of the shower, if desired.

Use a comb to separate the section of hair you need to work with. Comb the hair in the direction you want it to go to see how resistant the hair will be. If the hair stays just fine without falling back in another direction, then working with water may be all you need.

If the wet hair didn’t staying when combed, apply hair gel or styling mousse. Work the gel or mousse into the hair and comb it again to hold it in the direction you want.

Allow the hair to dry undisturbed help set it in place. Don't touch or adjust your hair throughout the day, and try not to sleep on that portion of your hair at night.

Repeat wetting the hair, applying gel, and combing daily to condition the hair to do what you want until you notice less gel and work are needed to get the hair to go in the direction you want.

Tip

Depending on the style you’re going for, it may take multiple attempts and many days before your hair does what you want. Use an extra strong hold hair spray, if needed, as an added way to position the hair and keep it from moving back to its previous direction or pattern.

Use bobby pins, if needed, to help hold the hair if it is still being resistant after applying gel.
