How to Separate Frogs From Tadpoles

Separate adult frogs from tadpoles after the female lays the eggs.

Before two frogs mate, each sex will go through a series of hormonal changes. These changes will cause the frog's skin to change colors and are brought on by a change in the weather and environment. Frogs of all types will breed several dozen tadpoles in one mating. Many species of frogs are cannibalistic and will see the tadpole eggs as a source of food. To ensure that the tadpoles can emerge from the eggs and grow into adult frog,s it is crucial to keep them safe.

Things You'll Need

• Several small jars
• Tubifex worms

Instructions

1. Remove the frogs from the tadpoles immediately after the female lays the eggs. The frogs can either be picked up by hand or removed with a fish net. Add more water to the tadpole tank to ensure that the eggs have enough room.

2. Place the frogs into a separate bowl. As stated above, the frogs will see the freshly laid eggs as a food source and attempt to eat them.

3. Place each tadpole into its own small tank or jar after it has hatched from the egg, which generally occurs 3 to 4 days after the eggs are initially laid. The tadpoles are also carnivorous and will attempt to eat one another as well.

4. Feed the baby tadpoles live tubifex worms, which can be purchased at most pet stores.
