Sock Hop Decorating

The 1950's were all about poodle skirts, drive ins and of course, sock hops. Throwing a sock hop party can bring the guests to an era from years ago, a much different time than now. Between the music and the retro décor, decorating for the sock hop can be just as much as the party itself. Does this Spark an idea?

Choose a cutout of a '50s car. The cutout, such as one of a pink Cadillac, can serve as décor and can be used as a background for pictures. The cutout may be of the entire car or just the front so guests can appear as though they are driving it. Depending on where you get the cut out, you may be able to rent it instead of buy it.

Hang up '50s posters on the walls. Many websites that sell posters will sell 1950's inspired posters that can make excellent and inexpensive wall décor for the sock hop. Another option is to check online auction sites to possibly get them at a cheaper price. You can choose between movie posters, celebrities or even ads from that era.

Put out checkered flooring. Popular in the 1950's, checkered flooring will add an interesting touch to the sock hop. You can choose between paper flooring or polyvinyl. Before purchasing the flooring, measure the size of the floor where you will be having the party so you know how much to order. Avoid putting any on the dance floor so guests have a more sturdy surface to dance on.

Make candy centerpieces. Order matching 1950's candy dishes from an online auction site and put one in the center of each table; if possible have them match the other colors at the party. Fill each one with a different type of 1950's candy, such as Mary Jane's. The candy can serve as décor, be available to guests to munch on and can reintroduce the guests to candy they may have long forgotten about.

Hang 1950's records around the party. Purchase the records from a music store or from an online auction site. Depending on the seller you may be able to get a bulk rate on your purchases. You can hang them along the edges of the food tables by hooking a ribbon through the center hole, then taping it to the edge of the table; hang them up from one end of the table to the other.
