Proper Way to Store LP Records

Keep your vinyl collection looking and sounding great.

"LP," or long play, records are considered by many audio enthusiasts to be the highest-quality format for recorded music. Because vinyl records are an analog type of media (which means they don't require digital conversion during playback), they are highly coveted by collectors. Vinyl records, however, are easier to damage than other formats; they also require more care to stand the test of time. Properly storing your LPs will ensure many years of enjoyable listening, in addition to maintaining the value of rare titles.

Instructions

1. Store your vinyl records vertically. Stacking horizontally can warp the vinyl over time. Horizontal stacking can also damage the grooves, causing degradation in sound quality. Do not tightly pack records in storage boxes. This can have the same effect as stacking horizontally.

2. Store your vinyl records so they do not lean. This can bend or warp the vinyl.

3. Choose a storage area that is cool and dry. This will prevent mildew from growing in the grooves of the records. Heat can also soften vinyl and cause deformation.

4. Place your records in plastic sleeves. Always store them in the cardboard dust jacket when not in use. This protects vinyl records from scratches and ultraviolet light.
