How to Use an Accurate Range for Finding Rifle Optics
Determine an accurate range by using rifle optics equipped with ranging marks (mil-dots) on the reticles. Rifle optics equipped with mil-dots determine distance in meters. To use another measure, such as feet, convert the range results with a calculator and distance conversion table. Collect the required data and do the math to build an accurate range.

Select a target, at the distance you are trying to determine, of a known height in meters. At this point, the distance is the unknown variable; the target must be a known variable to accurately determine the range.

Line up the scope's horizontal reticle with the base of your target and count the number of mil-dots to the top of the target. If the top of the target is between mil-dots, estimate the amount of the interval used (for instance, consider the top of a target falling between two mil-dots at .5).

Divide the height of target, in meters, by your mil-dot count and multiply your answer by one thousand. The results is your range to target in meters. For instance, if your target is 2 meters high and the mil-dot count is 2.5, then your equation would be: 2 ÷ 2.5 = .8 followed with .8 x 1000 = 800. The range to target is 800 meters.
