Build a wood shed.

A properly built wood shed keeps the weather out while allowing proper ventilation. The goal is to allow proper drying for your wood while also preventing rot. This is a great, inexpensive weekend project for a first-time builder. It is also perfect for a warm spring day when you still have the winter's chill on your mind but also have a full summer of wood drying time ahead of you. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 4x4 posts
  • Saw
  • Galvanized pipe strapping
  • Galvanized nails, 1-1/2"
  • 6 Foundation stones
  • Boards or scrap lumber of your choice to use for bracing
  • 2' x 4' wood planks or slab lumber for roof
  • Plywood
  • Asphalt roll-roofing
  • Hammer

Instructions

      Cut your posts to the correct length with a saw.

      Cut your 4x4 posts with a saw. You will need 3 posts around 8 feet long for the front wall of the woodshed. Cut 4 more posts to a length of 6 feet each to create the posts for the back wall of your wood shed.

      Build the front of the shed. Attach the 8 foot posts at regular intervals to a 12 foot beam by laying the pieces flat on the ground. Nail the strapping to the post, and then roll the post over on top of the strapping. Place the beam on top of the strapping, wrap the strapping up and around the beam, and nail this to the other side of the post.

      Build the back of the shed using the same instructions for the front, but use the 6 foot posts in place of the 8 foot posts.

      Lay out the foundation stones where the posts will rest when the job is complete.

      Prop each wall on the foundation stones, and then add bracing to the side walls until the structure stands solidly in place. Use a hammer and nails to add boards or scrap lumber in horizontal strips on the walls. Leave just enough space between boards to keep out snow and rain but to allow for ventilation.

      Add the roof. Space 8 lengths of slab lumber or 2 x 4s approximately 24 inches apart on the solid beams of the front and back wall. Cover with plywood and secure the plywood to the roof beams with a hammer and nails. Cover the plywood with asphalt roll roofing and nail down.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add a floor to this simple wood shed, simply flatten the ground underneath and add wooden pallets.
