How to Apply for Low Income Housing in Los Angeles

Public housing provides low-income families affordable housing options.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has developed the low-income housing in response to substandard housing and the lack of access to affordable units. Low-income housing provides families of modest means affordable housing options. The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) offers the Public Housing program to accommodate low-income families. The HACLA manages more than 60 public housing locations, according to the agency's website. The program requires the completion of an application, paperwork and may require a waiting period.

Instructions

1. Verify your eligibility. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development restricts eligibility based on household income. For example, in June 2010, a family of three could make no more than $57,100 annually. Check the current income limits by visiting the HACLA's website.

2. Contact the Los Angeles Housing Authority. You can visit the housing authority; download an application or call to request one at 213-353-2100.

3. Complete the application. Collect information about your household's composition and income. For example, locate social security cards, estimated income and education information. Date, sign and submit the application to the HACLA.

4. Prepare for the interview. The HACLA requires applicants complete an informational interview, which helps determine your eligibility. Prepare for the interview by locating income verifications (paystubs), social security cards and birth certificates. The HACLA places your name on a waiting list and offers up to three locations if you qualify.
