      Open a document in OpenOffice. On the toolbar at the top, select "Tools" and then click on "Options" at the bottom. A box will pop up.

      Select "Load/Save" on the left-hand side of the box that popped up, then select "General."

      Select "Text Document" from the "Document Type" drop-down menu. On the right-hand side, there is another drop-down menu called "Always Save As." Change the option in that drop-down menu to "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP". Click "OK" to save the change. This will make sure that every single document will be saved as a Microsoft Word document instead of an OpenOffice document.

      Navigate back to the Options dialog box. Under "General," then "Load/Save," go to the "Document Type" and select "Spreadsheet." Change the "Always Save As" option to "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP." Click "OK" to save the change. This makes sure that every single spreadsheet is saved as a Microsoft Excel document instead of an OpenOffice one.

  • Documents can be saved in many different formats by selecting the format in the save window.
