How to Open Password-Protected Zip Files

A password-protected Zip file is created in a specific program, such as Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint, that has a "Safe Encryption" feature. The only way you are able to open and extract the file is if you not only have the password placed on the Zip file, but if you have the same program used to compress the file.

Instructions

1. Load the program used to password protect the file. WinZip is a popular choice for computers. The Zip program installed on all Windows and Mac computers does not have the capabilities of opening a password-protected file, so you must download the exact program used for the compression.

2. Select "File," "Open" and choose the password-protected Zip file you want to load.

3. Type in the password when prompted, then retype the password to confirm.

4. Click "OK" and the contents from the Zip file load onto the screen.
