How to Build a Snow Fort Roof
Snow forts typically do not have roofs covering them; however, a roof made of densely compacted snow is possible. The key factor to making a snow roof that will not collapse is to have moist snow that will pack tightly together. Building a roof for a smaller fort is easier to accomplish because less surface area needs to be covered. With plenty of good packing snow and some shovels, a snow roof can help protect you from all those flying snowballs.

1
Create a sturdy snow column in the center of the fort from the ground to the surrounding wall height. Pack the snow very tightly together and moisten the snow with the water spray bottle if necessary. This extra column in the center of the fort will help support the newly built roof by providing another surface point for the roof to lay pressure on.

2
Gather snow from around the snow fort with a snow shovel. Create the snow roof using moist snow. Slushy snow will be too heavy for a roof to be created and powdery snow will not stick together.

3
Compact the moist snow into small blocks. Shovel snow into a small bucket and compact the snow to create evenly shaped blocks. The bucket can be either cylindrical or cubed.
-
4
Stack the snow blocks around the fort's four walls at a slight angle. Secure the snow blocks in place using extra snow from the surrounding area. Harden the blocks of snow by spraying water on the snow.
-
5
Continue to stack blocks of snow in layers, gradually angling the snow blocks toward the center of the fort. The snow roof will begin to form, gaining height and covering the inside of the fort. Secure each snow block layer by piling some extra snow on top of the roof.
