Scar visibility can be reduced with silicone products.

The appearance of scars can cause embarrassment and a lack of self-confidence for those that suffer from it. It is easiest to reduce the appearance of scars by treating the wound as soon as possible during the healing process. Fortunately, several creams are now sold that will reduce scars well after the wound has healed. These products can be purchased over the counter at any local pharmacy. Each product has a specific set of instructions, but they each follow the same general pattern. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash scarred skin with soap and water before applying any product.

    • 2

Rub a silicone gel product directly over the scar. Silicone gel products can be purchased over the counter. In order to improve the appearance of the scar, the gel must be applied multiple times daily for at least two months.

    • 3

Apply a silicone sheet directly over the scar with the adhesive side down. Each sheet should be worn for at least 12 hours a day and lasts three to four days. Keep the scar covered with the silicone sheet for at least eight weeks to see results.

    • 4

Apply sunscreen to the scar daily to prevent further discoloration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Begin treatment for scars as soon as possible during the healing process for the best results.

  • According to "The New York Times," Vitamin E is shown to do little to help with the appearance of scars.
