How to Learn to Count Cards in Black Jack
Card counting is a mental mathematical system of keeping track of all the cards in a black-jack game and using the information to your advantage. Many courts have ruled that card counting is legal, provided you count "in your head," and don't use devices of any kind to assist you. However, many of those same courts have ruled that casinos can ban card counters no matter what method they employ. There are many different systems of card counting, and card counting can also be used as a fun way to impress friends or family. Learning a card-counting system can take months and even years of practice, so it goes without saying it takes dedication and practice.

1
Select a system of card counting. Several different methods have been developed, most involving starting with a zero figure in your mind at the start of the game and adding and subtracting from zero as certain cards are laid down. The Black Jack Tactics website has details of different card-counting systems and how they work.

2
Create practice counting charts. These charts are a way of practicing your counting skills by creating hypothetical games and situations. You can verbally or mentally recite the proper play as practice outside of a real game. Practice charts can be made small enough to be carried with you so you can practice at any time. Practice charts show your hand and the dealer's "up" card.

Practice your card counting and concentration. Card counting does not involve keeping track of every card in the deck, but provides a system where you can raise or lower your bet based on a numerical system. Generally, the more accurate the system, the more complex it is, so keep rehearsing.
