Businesses in the European Union have their own unique multi-digit code "value added tax" (VAT) ID number. The VAT number is used to file a variety of tax paperwork in the country in which your business operates. If you're uncertain of the business tax number you have on file, you can easily check the Internet to see if the number you received is correct.

      Open your Web browser and go to the European Union VAT number validation site using the link in Resources.

      Use the drop-down menu and choose your country of residence. Type your VAT number in the appropriate field.

      Click "Verify" and your search results will inform you if your VAT number is valid.

  • If your VAT number is invalid check with your tax and fiscal administration for the correct number.
