How to Use Hot Rollers on Medium Hair

How to Use Hot Rollers on Medium Hair thumbnail
Hot rollers take about 15 minutes to set your style.

Hot rollers are heated styling tools that women with medium to long hair use to create large curls as well as give their hair body and volume. Unlike a curling iron, which curls only a small section of hair at a time, hot rollers can be used on all of your hair simultaneously. While the hot rollers are setting your hair, you are free to do other tasks, such as applying makeup or getting dressed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Heat your hot rollers according to the instructions that came with the set. Make sure your hair is dry and tangle-free. If you are using styling cream, apply this to your hair now.

    • 2

Check that the roller set is fully heated, then use your comb to separate a lock of hair above your forehead (your bangs area) from the rest of your hair. This section should be as wide as the width of the roller you are going to use. If you are using hairspray, lightly mist this lock of hair.

    • 3

Hold the end of the section of hair against the hot roller. Carefully rotate the roller inwards to wrap the hair around the roller. Continue to roll the lock of hair up to your roots.

    • 4

Secure the roller with the roller clip that came with your roller set.

    • 5

Repeat this process with another section of hair, behind the first section. Continue until you have rolled up all of your hair.

    • 6

Wait until the rollers have cooled down (about 15 minutes). Take your rollers down by removing a roller clip, then gently unwinding the roller from the hair.

    • 7

Use your hands to lightly shake your curls out or arrange them how you like. Do not use a comb or brush at this stage, as you will lose your curl and cause frizz. For extra hold, mist your hair with hairspray again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your hot roller set comes with varying sizes of hot rollers, use the small rollers on the side of your head and the large rollers on top.

  • Use caution when using hot rollers, as you would with any heated styling tool.
