How to Measure a Cable TV Signal

Even the best television won't perform at a high level if the signal coming to it isn't strong enough. If you want to get an accurate reading of the strength of the cable signal coming into your home, you'll need a specialized piece of testing equipment known as a signal strength meter, sometimes incorrectly referred to as a field strength meter.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the cable from its jack at the point where you want to test the signal strength. For example, if you want to test the strength at your television, unscrew the cable jack from the back of the television.

    • 2

Insert the cable plug into the input jack of your meter. The exact location of the input will vary from meter to meter, so it's always wise to check your owner's manual if you need more detailed information.

    • 3

Turn the meter on. Most meters are battery powered, and there will be an on/off switch, usually located on the side of the unit. Again, consult your manual if you need more information.

Check the readout for your signal strength. Most meters have a digital display, but some models will have an old-style analog readout. A strong CATV signal should be in the range of 60 to 100 dB (decibels).
