How to Convert 4D Data

4D is a relational database which is available on several computer platforms. 4D data can be converted to many other formats by exporting it from within the 4D database. Once the export file is created, it may then be used as is, or reimported into a database, spreadsheet, or other tabular system of data as you wish.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a new database method in the 4D database structure.

    • 2

Enter this line of programming code into the method: "EXPORT DATA ()"

    • 3

Execute the new method from the methods window, or by selecting it and issuing a run command. 4D will prompt you with a save file dialog box.

    • 4

Enter the filename for the export.

    • 5

Select the type of export you wish to create: plain text, fixed length text (with padded spaces, ensuring all fields are equal in length), Extensible Markup Language (XML), Symbolic Link (SYLK), Database Interchange Format (DIF), dBase (DBF), or native 4D. Click "OK".

    • 6

Import the export file, as desired, into the software you wish to use to complete the conversion.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are unsure what export format you will need, plain text is the most universally recognized. You can also create several export files, in order to ensure that you have the one you need.
