How to Convert 35 mm Slides Onto a CD

How to Convert 35 mm Slides Onto a CD thumbnail
You can convert your slides to a CD.

Although 35 mm negative slides once came in handy when displaying the images with a slide projector, the format is falling by the wayside in the age of digital images. Because of this, you may want to convert your 35mm slides into a digital format for preservation or ease of use. Thankfully, it is possible to convert the slides to a CD in either of two different methods: taking the slide into a local photo establishment or scanning the slides yourself onto a CD.

Instructions

  1. Photography Developers

    • 1

Take your slides into a local convenience store or any other location that develops film (such as Walgreens, Target, Walmart or CVS).

    • 2

Count out the number of slides you have, then place the slides in one of the available pouches. You typically pay per slide converted, so knowing the number of slides is helpful when determining the overall cost of your conversion.

    • 3

Ask for the slides to be placed on a CD. The photography developer has all the necessary equipment to import the images onto a CD, saving you the need to purchase expensive scanners and CD burners.

    • 4

Return to the developer and pick up your slides and the CD. Pay for the conversion. It is now possible to view your slides on the CD when the disc is inserted into a computer.

    Scan Yourself

    • 5

Connect the slide scanner to your computer and install the drivers required for the hardware.

    • 6

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and finally "Scanner and Camera Wizard." This program comes preinstalled on Windows-based computers. Once the program has launched select "Scan" and the program detects the connected slide scanner.

    • 7

Insert the slide into the slide scanner and click "Scan." The image imports into the computer. A save window appears on the screen. Title the image, then select a location to save the files. Choose "OK" and the file saves onto the computer. Repeat the process with all your slides.

    • 8

Insert the blank CD into the CD burner of the computer, then choose "Start," then (My) "Computer," and double-click the CD drive icon. A window appears, representing the blank CD.

    • 9

Drag the scanned image files you created into the open window. Close the open window, right-click the CD icon and choose "Properties" from the pull-down menu. Click the "Record" tab, then select "OK," and the files are burned onto the CD.
