How to Remove Mac G5 Case Hex Screws
The Mac G5 is a desktop computer designed by Apple Computers. It is part of their Mac Pro line of computers. On some cases Apple uses hex screws to hold portions of the case together and also inside the case for components such as CD drives and hard drives.

1
Shut down the computer and disconnect all cables and connections including the power supply. If you are attempting to remove the hex screws on the bottom of the G5, proceed to step 2. If you are trying to remove hex screws inside the G5, such as screws holding a hard drive or CD drive in place proceed to Step 3.
-
2
Gently lift up the G5 case and lay it on its side. Locate the hex screws on the bottom and use a hex screwdriver to loosen and remove each one. Hold the bottom section of the case as a portion of the case may come apart when screws are removed.

3
Turn the computer around so that the back is facing you. Place one hand on the left side panel.
-
4
Locate the release latch on the left side of the rear of the computer about halfway down the back. Lift the latch up and pull the side panel away from the computer.
-
5
Place your finger in the small groove in the top center of the clear plastic air deflector inside the computer. Pull the air deflector away from the computer and lift it out.
-
6
Locate the hard drive or CD drive you want to remove in the top right section of the inside of the case. Use the hex screwdriver to remove each of the screws holding the drive in place. Pull the drive tab downwards to release the drive from the slot. Note that some drives do not have screws holding them in place, rather hex screws serve as rack guides to slide the drive into a slot. If you do not see screws, slide the drive out and remove the four guide screws on the side of the drive.
-
7
Insert these removed guide screws into the new drive and slide the drive into place so the screws line up with the drive rack inside the case. The drive will click into place.
-
8
Replace the air deflector and side panel. Push the release latch back into place. Replace any screws removed from the bottom of the case.

Tips & Warnings
Use a hex screwdriver set that has multiple sizes as the size of the hex screws may vary depending on the version of the G5 case.
Touch your hands to a metal surface to disperse static electricity before touching components inside the computer to prevent damaging the components.
