How to Convert VOBs to MPEGs

VOB files appear primarily on DVDs.

Many users watch DVDs all the time, but remain unfamiliar with its proprietary format, the DVD Video Object (VOB) container. VOB files use the MPEG standard as their basis but are specifically designed for storing movie data on DVDs. By converting VOBs into MPEG files, you'll make them playable in programs other than DVD players.

Quick Method

1. Copy the VOB file you want to convert to your hard drive. In order to do so, just drag the VOB file off of the DVD onto your desktop.

2. Right-click on the VOB file and select "Rename" in the contextual menu.

3. Delete the ".VOB" extension and replace it with ".MPG" or ".MPEG," both of which correspond to the MPEG extension. Changing the file's name does not work as a conversion method for most file types, but it does in this instance due to the similarities between VOB and MPEG files.

OJOsoft Total Video Converter

1. Download and install Total Video Converter. The site hosts a trial version of the software so you can try it before you purchase it.

2. Open the software and click the upper "Browse" button. In the contextual menu, select the VOB you want to convert and click "Open."

3. Click "To MPEG" at the top of the menu.

4. Click the lower "Browse" button and select a destination file for your converted VOB file.

5. Click "Convert." The converted VOB will appear in the folder you selected in the previous step.

Leawo VOB to MPEG Video Converter

1. Download and install the Leawo software. Like Total Video Converter, the site hosts a demo version of the application.

2. Run the software and click "Add." In the contextual menu, find the VOB you want to convert and click "Open" to select it.

3. Click on the "Profile" drop-down menu to select an output profile for your converted file. You can also adjust video quality and audio quality in their drop-down menus should you wish to.

4. Click "Open" to select a destination folder for your converted file.

5. Click the green arrow in the lower right corner to convert the movie. The file will appear in the destination folder you chose in the previous step.
