Lighting is an effective measure in your perimeter security package.

Doing security yourself is a simple task that can increase the safety of your home and deter burglary and theft. Taking care of your home's perimeter is one of the most important parts of home security. The perimeter is the boundary of the area you wish to secure. In terms of a home this would be the windows and doors as well as the limits of your property. Keeping the perimeter secure is an important step in keeping your home, possessions and family safe. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Start at the base of the perimeter: your home. Lock all the windows, especially the ones at ground level. Don't overlook the windows in your basement; they are the closest to the ground and could be the easiest for an intruder to penetrate. You should keep your doors locked even when you're home and awake.

Use yard lights at night to keep the outside of your home illuminated. Installing motion detector lights is also an effective tactic. If a burglar knows he can be seen breaking in because the home is illuminated, he might be less likely to do so.

    • 3

Put away any tools that could help a burglar or intruder do his job. These include but are not limited to hammers, shovels, long poles and especially ladders. All of these should be put in a locked shed or a closed garage.

Get a dog. A dog is an effective helper in perimeter security because it is not only an alarm system but also a defense system.
