Cocoa butter is a miracle ingredient that's used just as much, if not more, in beauty as it is in food. Known for its ability to diminish scars and possibly even stretch marks, cocoa butter is deeply moisturizing and leaves skin super soft and supple. It's derived from the cocoa bean and is a byproduct of the process of making chocolate and cocoa powder. Even in its pure form, it's ready to use directly on skin.

Wash your face with a facial cleanser and a warm, damp washcloth. Don’t dry your face; the cocoa butter works better if applied to damp skin.

Tie your hair back to avoid getting cocoa butter in it, as the product can make hair greasy.

Scoop about a dime-sized amount if cocoa butter into your hand. Cocoa butter is semisolid but starts to soften right away with body heat.

Rub the cocoa butter between your palms and then over your face, starting at the driest areas. If you have combination skin, avoid rubbing the cocoa butter on oily areas. Massage it in until fully absorbed.

The cocoa butter may feel slightly greasy for a short while, but it'll gradually sink into the skin more. If you want to speed up the process, wet a washcloth in very warm water and press it—don’t rub—against your face.

Warning

The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology warns against using cocoa butter if you have acne.
