How to Identify Neutral Wire in a Chandelier
One of the most confusing tasks in replacing or repairing a chandelier is identifying the wires that connect it to the electrical system. In addition to a hot wire that provides electricity to the light, there is a neutral wire. The neutral wire is the wire that carries electricity from the chandelier back to the main fuse box, thus completing the electrical circuit. Although it may seem confusing, there are several things to look for that will help you identify the neutral wire. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Go to the main fuse box and shut off the electricity for the room that the chandelier is located in.
-
2
Climb up on a ladder and detach the chandelier from the ceiling by removing the screws located on the base with a screwdriver. You will need at least one person to assist with this and possibly more depending on the size of the chandelier.

3
Look for a white-colored wire sticking out of the top of the chandelier. White colored wires are always the neutral wire. In some non-standard installations, there may be multiple white wires.
-
4
Look closely at all of the wires extending out of the chandelier and look for small writing on the side of the wire that says something similar to "neutral conductor".
-
5
Feel the insulation around the wire with your fingers to see if it has tiny ridges, which is also an indicator of the neutral wire.
