How to Convert XLS to WPS Files

Convert your document formats.

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program used to create anything from financial tracking to work schedules. The default format used in Excel is XLS (for versions of Excel made up to 1995). WPS is the file format for Microsoft Works, a word processor that has now been replaced by the standard Microsoft Word software. If you are running the older Microsoft Excel and need to convert the format to WPS, there is a file converter available off the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the ABC Amber Text Converter (see Resources).

    • 2

Launch the software (click "Start," "All Programs" and choose "ABC Text Converter"), then click "Open" and choose the XLS file you want to convert.

    • 3

Check off the document you want to convert the file to on the right side of the program window (.wps) and choose a save-to location.

    • 4

Click "Save As" and the document saves as the new format. Because the document is rather small compared to other file formats, the conversion only takes a few minutes to complete. Once finished, you can open the new WPS file in Microsoft Works.
