DIY Elk Hunting in Wyoming
Wyoming has large elk herds with trophy opportunities on public lands. DIY elk hunts in Wyoming are difficult because the terrain is steep and hunting pressure is high during elk season. The archery season offers the longest period of opportunity, but elk are difficult to stalk and you must get within closer range. The rifle seasons are shorter but coming within range of an elk is easier.

1
Begin physical training several months before the hunt. Hike several miles each day with a weighted pack. You will need to hike several miles each day of the hunt with a loaded pack in order to find trophy elk.
-
2
Study maps of the area you will hunt. Look for exposed benches, water sources and draws that require walking to access. These areas will receive minimal hunting pressure because of the effort required to access them.

Scout your hunting area before the season opens. Arrive as early as possible and take your camping gear into the backcountry. Establish a base camp and begin scouting the areas you circled on the map. Glass the landscape thoroughly with high powered binoculars and look for trophy elk to target on the opening day.

Use a cow call sparingly to draw bull elk into your area. Use a bugle only if other bulls are bugling. Use the bugle to interrupt and agitate dominant bulls. When used properly, the bulls will charge at the call to establish dominance.

Prepare for success. Make arrangements to pack a kill out of the backcountry in advance. You can use a satellite GPS device to contact a packer. The packer will meet you with mules and assist with the animal. You can also contact friends and family depending on the distance and the size of the animal.
