How to Make Homemade Garage Wall Cabinets

Build cabinets for your garage on your own.

Is your garage cluttered and unorganized? Do you search your garage for hours for a particular tool or item? If so, consider building some high-quality garage wall storage cabinets yourself. Hanging cabinets on the wall will allow you to organize the items in your garage and save time. Adding cabinets will allow you to maximise the space in your garage. Garage cabinets can be built using simple hand tools.

• Power drill
• 1 1/2-inch grabber screws

Instructions

1. Determine the size of wall cabinets needed. If you are planning on putting wall cabinets along the entire wall, measure the wall with a tape measure. Divide the length of the wall by the number of cabinets you would like. This will give you the width the cabinets need to be. Determine how tall the cabinets should be. These instructions will be based on a 36-inch wide, 36-inch tall and 12-inch deep wall cabinet, but the measurements can be adjusted for other sizes.

2. Develop a parts list. Most wall cabinets are 12 inches deep. You will need two sides for each cabinet. They should be 11 1/4-inches by 36 inches. The top and bottom will butt-joint into the sides. These need to be 1 1/2 inches smaller than the overall cabinet width. The top and bottom should be 11 1/4 inches by 34 1/2 inches. The back will fasten directly to the back of the cabinet. The size should be 36 inches by 36 inches. If you would like two doors, the size will be 17 3/4 inches by 36 inches.

3. Determine the material needed by drawing the cabinet parts on a sheet of graph paper to scale. The cabinet should be built from 3/4-inch thick material. White melamine material is sufficient for garage cabinets.

4. Cut the parts from the material using a circular saw. Label the edges of the parts with to avoid confusion during assembly.

5. Assemble the cabinet by butt-jointing the cabinet side onto the top and bottom. Apply a small amount of glue to the joint. Fasten the two parts together using a power drill with 1 1/2-inch grabber screws. Place the other side onto the cabinet and attach using 1 1/2-inch grabber screws.

6. Place a small amount of glue around the cabinet where the back section will be applied. Attach the back using a power drill and 1 1/2-inch grabber screws.

7. Mount hinges on the doors using a power drill. You will need two hinges for each door.

8. Lay the cabinet on its back on a level surface. Align the doors onto the cabinet and fasten the hinges to the cabinet using a power drill.
