Things You'll Need

  • We women spend countless hours on our hair, to say the least. Whether we're in beauty shops or in our own bathroom mirrors, it's safe to assume we're paying some serious attention to our crowning glory. If your hair is naturally straight or flat-ironed straight, wrapping is a great technique to maintain the style, volume and health of your hair, all while minimizing the exposure to heat.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb hair straight down all around the head, letting the crown of the head be the dividing point. You will end up with a "Cousin It" sort of look as the hair in the front will be combed forward over the forehead and into the face.

    • 2

Decide which direction you want to wrap your hair. You can wrap to the left or the right depending upon how you want your hair to fall. For example, if you wear a part on the right side, wrap your hair to the left. Conversely, if you wear your part on the left, wrap your hair to the right. If you wear no part at all, you will still need to choose a side to part your hair on for wrapping purposes.

    • 3

Use the comb to part the hair. Begin brushing the hair away from the part with the paddle brush. Use the bristled brush to smooth each section as you go along. If your hair is medium to long length, you may want to tuck your hair behind your ear or use bobby pins to hold it in place while you wrap the other pieces.

    • 4

Make another part behind the ear. Straighten out any kinks and begin combing it toward the part. You may want to place your hand over the crown of your head while you wrap this second portion, as you don't want the hair to wrap on top of the crown. In order to maintain the correct shape, it will need to be wrapped on the sides, leaving the crown open. Continue brushing the second section until you have gotten it all the way around with the rest of the hair. Your part should be covered now.

    • 5

Use your brushes to smooth the remaining section of hair around the sides of the head, blending into the hair that is already wrapped. Once the general shape is established, tighten up the wrap with the bristle brush. If you have used any bobby pins to hold your hair during the process, remove them carefully before putting on your scarf.

    • 6

Wrap the hair with a scarf, preferably one that is a satiny material, so it will hold moisture and help further smooth the hair together.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't get a good wrap the first time, don't be discouraged. This usually takes a bit of practice. Don't be afraid to comb it back down and start over if things get messy.

  • Adding a light serum or oil sheen before wrapping helps condition the hair and smooth the ends together, for a more cohesive healthy bounce.

  • Wrapping your hair gently after a roller set or Shirley Temple curls will leave you with amazing waves the next couple days.

  • Don't use any hair accessories that are too rough for your hair. Make sure you use a brush with the right kind of bristles so you can avoid breakage.

  • Don't tie your scarf too tight as it will leave a line in your hair that will cramp your style.
