How to Install an Adjustable ClosetMaid
ClosetMaid shelving can be built to just about any specification and can fulfill almost any closet need. The shelving is lightweight and durable, and is installed easily. Since the pieces snap and slide together, you can change the look or design of your closet any time you wish. Even though there is hardware running down each wall, all of the weight of the shelves is supported by the hanging strip that is attached to the header board at the top of the closet. - #12-by-2-inch panhead screws
- Pencil
- Stud finder
- Bolt cutter or hacksaw

Place the hanging strip on the top of the closet wall, against the ceiling. Most walls have a 2-by-4 that runs across them near the ceiling. Drill the panhead screws through the holes on the hanging strip and into the wood. If your closet does not have a wood strip near the ceiling, locate the studs and drill the screws into them.

Draw the design of your closet on a sheet of paper so that you know where the hanging standards will go. The standards need to be placed at least 4 inches inside the end of the shelves, and can be no more than 2 feet apart. The closer the standards are together, the stronger they are. Hang the standards up to give you a visual of the closet. They can be easily moved before you screw them into place.

Leave a mark on the wall where the hole closest to the center of the standard is. Remove the standard and drill a 1/2-inch hole into the drywall on that mark. Remove the toggle from its bolt. Place the bolt through the hole in the standard. Place the toggle over the end of the bolt. Hang the standard back up and feed the toggle and bolt through the drywall. If the standard happens to be over a stud, ignore the toggle bolt and just use the #12-by-2 panhead screws to attach the standard to the wall.

Install the shelf supports into the holes on the standards by sliding the slots on the back of the support into the holes and pulling down to lock them into place.

Cut the wire shelves to the desired length with the bolt cutter or hacksaw. Place the end caps that came with the kit over the cut wires. Slide the shelves toward the back of the supports until they lock into place on the support hooks.
