How to Look Up an LLC in California

LLCs in California must register with the secretary of state.

A limited liability company is a business entity that is formed to limit the liability of the members. Once formed, the LLC maintains its own debts and legal responsibilities. All limited liability companies operating in California must register with the California Secretary of State's office. The Secretary of State has provided an online database to find LLCs that registered in the state of California.

Instructions

1. Click the option to perform an online search. Select the search type "Limited Liability Corporation/Limited Partnership Name".

2. Enter the LLC name or the LLC entity number. Click "Search". Use multiple, distinct keywords to limit your results. Don't use punctuation or common words such as "the," "LLC" or "California."

3. Scan the results to find the correct LLC. The fields including in the search results include the entity number, date filed, status, entity name and agent for service or process.

4. Click the entity name for detailed information including the LLC's jurisdiction and address.
