Water Is Leaking From My Maytag Dishwasher's Front

Misty Faucheux

Dishwashers use hot water to help sanitize and clean your dishes, and this water is sprayed around the tub via a spray arm. Water leaks in Maytag dishwashers are often caused by common problems, such as faulty seals or components. If your Maytag portable or built-in dishwasher is leaking from the front, see if you can figure out where the leak is originating. Fixing the leak yourself saves you money on service repair fees.

Sudsing and Level Problems

Sudsing is a common reason why you see leaks on the front of your Maytag dishwasher. Using too much or old detergent causes over-sudsing. If suds are leaking out of the front of your dishwasher, open up the door to stop the cycle, and then cancel it. Rerun the dishwasher, but don't add more detergent. Use a carpenter's level to see if the dishwasher is level. If not, water can leak out one corner of the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is not level, adjust the leveling feet or stabilize the floor beneath the dishwasher.

Overfilling

Your dishwasher can overfill if the water inlet valve or the float switch isn't working properly. Check the float switch to see if it's stuck in the open position. Remove any item blocking it from closing. If the switch is defective, order a new one; repairing this component is difficult. Examine the water inlet valve to see if it isn't turning properly or is leaking. If this component is defective, you generally cannot repair it. Purchase a new one from a local parts store.

Door Gasket and Seal Problems

Water leaking out of the front of your Maytag dishwasher could indicate a problem with the door gasket or main tub seal. See if the door gasket is torn or falling off. If torn, you will need a new one. Reattach the gasket if it's falling off. Check the main tub seal, which runs around the base of the dishwasher. This seal can crack or tear after long use. Pry it out, and replace it. Never use water above 150 degrees Fahrenheit in your dishwasher, since high water temperature can compromise the seals.

Spray Arm Problems

If your Maytag dishwasher is leaking near the front, see if the spray arm is split. If it is, water will come out too fast, causing leaks. Order a new spray arm, since you can't normally fix this. Always load the bottom rack of your dishwasher to prevent the spray arm from spraying water directly on to the door, which can force water through the gaskets.
