It's easy to forget to water your plants. It's not like they nag you. But all of a sudden, there they are, with droopy, fallen, brown leaves, sitting in a pot of dry-as-dust dirt. Fortunately, you can easily rig up an automatic plant-watering system to deliver an even supply of water to houseplants for several weeks. It will ensure that your plants do not suffer, whether you are on vacation or just plain forgetful. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Potted plant
  • Decorative vase or cup
  • Braided 1/4-inch diameter nylon cord
  • Scissors
  • Kitchen knife

Instructions

      Place the decorative vase or cup near the plant.

      Measure the length of distance between the bottom of the vase and the center of the plant.

      Cut the braided nylon cord to meet the measured length.

    • 4

      Insert the cord in the vase, making sure it reaches the very bottom.

    • 5

      Insert the opposite end of the cord in the plant soil, using a kitchen knife to push the cord 3 inches below the surface.

      Fill the vase with water, and pour some water around the cord in the plant soil. The nylon cord will wick the water into the plant soil as long as the vase is filled with water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another automatic plant-watering system uses a glass bottle filled with water. Insert the neck of the filled wine, soda or smaller bottle in the soil and to provide a slow drip of water.
