Shaving can cause razor burn or bumps, or just general skin irritation, leaving your face red. The redness may be accompanied by pain, along with itching and flaking skin. To stop facial redness caused by shaving, properly prepare your skin, use the right shaving techniques and treat your skin post-shave. Above all, if your face is red and irritated from shaving, give it a few days to heal before shaving again.

Step 1

Soften your facial hair and skin by taking a shower before you shave your face. The heat from the water helps loosen the hair follicles, making them easier to remove and reducing irritation and redness.

Step 2

Choose a shaving gel or cream that's hypoallergenic and doesn’t have added fragrances. Harsh ingredients often found in shaving gels or creams can cause redness while you shave. Look for a product designed for sensitive skin and one that contains salicylic or glycolic acid.

Step 3

Use a clean, sharp razor each time you shave your face. A dull razor is more likely to irritate your skin, causing redness and bumps. Use light pressure when moving the razor over your skin; avoid going over the same area several times. Shave in the direction your hair is growing to help prevent skin irritation.

Step 4

Rinse your face with cool water after shaving to close the pores. Apply a moisturizing aftershave immediately after rinsing and drying your face to restore moisture. Don’t use aftershave products that contain menthol or alcohol, because these ingredients can cause or increase irritation.
