Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the wheatgrass seeds in a bowl filled with water. Drain the water and refill the bowl to cover the seeds. Let them soak for 8 to 10 hours.

    • 2

Drain and soak them for another 8 to 10 hours and repeat for a third soaking session until the seeds have sprouted tiny roots.

    • 3

Line the bottom of a 21-by-11-by-2-inch plastic tray with unbleached paper towels or newspaper.

    • 4

Moisten organic compost or potting mix, and fill the tray to a depth of 1½ inches.

    • 5

Lay out the seeds evenly in a dense layer, and gently press them into the soil.

    • 6

Place the tray in indirect sunlight.

    • 7

Keep the soil moist, watering with a spray bottle, twice daily if necessary. Place a sheet of damp newspaper over the tray to maintain soil moisture. Remove it when the seedlings are about 1 inch tall.

    • 8

Harvest the wheatgrass when it is 6 to 8 inches tall. Cut the grass with sharp scissors just above the seeds.

    • 9

Rinse the wheatgrass before putting it in a wheatgrass or gear juicer. You can also chop the leaves into small pieces and grind them with a mortar and pestle, adding small amounts of water until the wheatgrass is drinkable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mold may grow at the base of the wheatgrass in more humid areas. It is not harmful. Simply cut above it when harvesting.
