Several universities, employers, and individuals use Corel WordPerfect. You will not have to purchase the software to open the document or save it in Microsoft Word format. Microsoft Word contains document converters which will allow you to open WordPerfect documents and earlier versions of Word documents. The following steps will help you convert a WordPerfect document to a Microsoft Word document.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Word from the “Programs” menu by selecting the “Start” button or the “Quick Launch” toolbar.

    • 2

Click the “File” on the menu, select “Open”. Select “All Files” in the drop-down window under the “File Name” window.

    • 3

Locate the WordPerfect document, select the file name and click “Open”. The formatting may not match the original document.

    • 4

Click “Save as” from the “File” menu. Select the Word document format in the “Save as file type” drop-down menu. Click “Save”.

Tips & Warnings

  • Opening documents created in other programs can cause the formatting to shift, and some elements may not convert. If this happens, you will need to answer the prompts and make the changes necessary. You may be able to replace those elements with ones compatible with Microsoft Word.

  • When saving your WordPerfect document as a Microsoft Word version remember to save as a “.doc,” not “.docx.” Not everyone has upgraded to Microsoft Word 2007, which uses the “.docx” extentions.
