Easiest Way for a Kid to Make Money

Easiest Way for a Kid to Make Money thumbnail
Use your own equipment when providing a service

With prices soaring and child labor laws enforced, it can be difficult for a kid to buy the latest technologies, go to the movies or even pay for school lunches. However, running your own business provides a way to earn money that is both legal and easy. If you are under the age of 10 you can earn money with an adult's assistance. Children at least 10 years old can make money with minimal adult supervision, if any.

Determine what skills you have and how you can use them to make money. If you enjoy animals, start a dog-walking business or begin pet-sitting for friends and family, or offer to clean up after the dogs. If you enjoy little kids, become a parent's helper or babysitter. Lawn mowing, car washing and weed pulling are options for you if you prefer being outdoors. You could also set up a beverage stand and sell lemonade, fruit juice, or cold bottled water.

Decide how much to charge for your service. Younger children with less experience should charge less than older, more experienced kids. If your parent helps you perform the task, your fee should be on the lower end. Rates for dog-walking vary between $1.00 and $5.00, depending on your age, how long the walk is, and how many dogs. You can comfortably charge between $2.00 and $7.00 for babysitting, either per child or per hour, depending on your age and experience. You can bill $3.00 to $25.00 for mowing lawns, $1.00 to $5.00 to wash a car and up to $5.00 for pulling weeds. Prices for cold beverages will range between $1.00 for lemonade, up to $2.50 for a cold bottle of water.

Create colorful flyers. Be sure to include your contact information, prices and services. You can attach coupons to it for people to take with them. These should have all of the information on them, too.

Gather the tools required to complete the jobs you advertised and set them aside. When you get your first customer you should be prepared to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you are washing cars or selling beverages, set up before posting the flyers.

    • 5

Post the flyers around your neighborhood. Some grocery stores have community boards where you can post flyers, as do some laundromats, community centers and public libraries. Hand the flyers out to your friends and family or deliver them door-to-door.

    • 6

Accept the jobs as the calls come in. Keep track of your schedule on a calendar. Show up on time for appointments. Be courteous, professional, respectful and thorough.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your parents before starting any business.

  • Get your parents' permission before using any of their equipment.

  • Always use your best manners. You will be more likely to get repeat business and positive referrals.

  • Do not post your last name or address on your flyers. You only need to post the service you provide, such as dog-walking, the price and your phone number. Listing other personal information could be dangerous.

  • Do not go to a stranger's house alone. Always practice safety first.
