How to Treat Razor Bumps on Black Men
Men who prefer a clean-shaven face likely shave their beards or facial hair daily with little irritation. But if you're an African-American male, regular shaving may trigger the development of irritating skin bumps known as razor bumps. These types of bumps are common in black males due to the coarse, curly nature of their hair. But even if you're prone to razor bumps, there are ways to treat this condition and relieve discomfort.

1
Replace blades after three shaves. Old blades may hold bacteria which can seep into pores and cause razor bumps. Switch out your razor blades regularly--every three shaves with disposable razors and every few months with electric razors (or as recommended by the brand).
-
2
Look for a hair growth pattern. Follow your hair patten while shaving with a disposable razor to achieve smooth, bump-free skin after shaves. Shaving opposite your growth pattern can cause hairs to grow back into the skin and create bumps.

3
Wash with anti-bacterial soap. Cleanse and rinse your face with anti-bacterial facial cleanser to remove any traces of bacteria from razor blades.
-
4
Experiment with astringent. Over the counter products for skin irritations help tighten pores and treat unsightly acne and razor bumps. Apply as directed.
-
5
Apply shaving lotion. Use shaving cream or lotion after shaves to lower skin irritation. Topical cortisone creams also fight skin irritations associated with razor bumps and help the healing process.
-
6
Give your face a break. When razor bumps become a constant annoyance, consider growing a beard or a little facial hair in order to cut back on shaving.
-
7
Assess your diet. Certain foods increase the likelihood of skin irritation. Prevent and facilitate the healing process by eliminating or reducing fatty foods and sodium from your diet.
