How to Remove an Oil Pan on a 1997 Chevrolet S10

by Zyon Silket

Over the years, the oil-pan gasket on the 1997 Chevrolet S10 will start to deteriorate. The only way to remove the gasket is to remove the oil pan first. The process of removing the oil pan is not overly complicated and can be completed in your garage or backyard. With just a few hand tools you will be well on the way to repairing that oil leak that has been threatening to damage your S10 engine.

Step 1

Lift the front end of the Chevrolet S10 either with front-end ramps or with a set of jack stands. This creates clearance between the oil pan and the ground to allow for easier access the oil pan. As a precaution, set the emergency brake and place a wheel chock behind the rear tire.

Step 2

Remove the oil-drain screw from the oil pan and drain the engine oil into a drain pan. Replace the oil-drain screw.

Step 3

Remove each of the 14 oil-pan bolts. Start in the center of one side and alternate from side to side as you remove the bolts. This prevents the pan from warping from uneven pressure.

Step 4

Wedge a scraper between the engine block and the oil pan and slightly twist the scraper to pry the oil pan off the engine block.

Step 5

Slide the oil pan backwards and downwards to gain clearance between the oil pan and the oil pump as you remove the oil pan.
