One way to add volume and sexiness to your hair is to add waves and curls. Whether you have straight or naturally wavy hair, curling medium-length layered hair is a cinch with the proper tools. The key to curling hair with layers is to mix the layers together when using the styling tool. This will make the curls look more natural. Also, applying heat to your hair to curl can cause damage. When curling your hair, it is important to use a thermal protection hair product.

Start with wet, but not dripping, hair. Flip your head upside down and spray your strands from root to tip with a thermal protection hair product. Or, apply a thermal protection cream from root to tip.

Squeeze a small amount of curl cream into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Evenly coat your strands with the curl cream, focusing on the bulk part of your hair.

Flip your head up and comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb. This removes tangles and spreads the product evenly through your hair.

Blow dry your hair until it is completely dry. Dry your hair upside-down for ultimate volume.

Part your hair horizontally just above your ear. Clip the remaining hair away.

Separate a 1- to 2-inch piece of hair (ref 1) from below the part. Open the barrel of the curling iron and place the end of the piece of hair at the base of the curling iron. Release the button to close the barrel.

Quickly roll the curling iron up so that the hair wraps around the barrel. Spread the hair over the barrel instead of rolling it in one place. Let the hair heat on the barrel for about 15 to 30 seconds.

Press the button on the curling iron to open the barrel. Gently pull downwards, without unraveling the piece of hair, until the hair is released from the barrel.

Repeat Steps 6 through 8 for all of the hair along the part. Create a new part above the curls and repeat the entire process. Do this for the other side and the back of your head, working in layers. (ref 1)
